The founding principles
The Charter
A republic is held together by what its people agree to uphold. These are our common principles.
Think for yourself.
Listen carefully. Question the consensus. A room full of thoughtful people is useful only if everyone is free to disagree.
Do the work.
Read the accounts. Understand the business. Ask the awkward question. Conviction should follow evidence.
Respect the downside.
Capital is hard earned. Consider what can go wrong before considering what might go right. No opportunity deserves blind faith.
Be useful to the room.
Bring a question, an observation or experience that helps someone else think more clearly. Attention is a contribution too.
Declare your interests.
Say when you own, advise or stand to benefit from a business being discussed. Trust depends on knowing where people stand.
Keep confidence.
Private discussions stay private. Seek permission before sharing someone else’s information, identity or work.
Take the long view.
Businesses are made of people, customers and years of effort. Treat them accordingly. A good decision need not be a quick one.
Who is behind the Republic
Written by the editorial team.
Republic of Investors is a publication and a private community. The Dispatches are written and edited by the editorial team. Members compare experience and discuss businesses together.
We write about businesses and the people who build them. Where we have an interest in something we cover, we say so.
